Frequently Asked Questions
How frequently do I need my chimney cleaned?
That depends on how often you use your fireplace. A good rule of thumb for wood-burning fireplaces is to get your chimney inspected and swept after you burn 1 to 1 ½ cords of wood. If you use a wood stove for heat every winter, it’s a good idea to call your chimney sweep in Charlotte annually. Creosote and soot buildup that has reached ¼” thickness has become dangerous and increases your risk of chimney fire and blocked flue.
Do I need to get my chimney cleaned if I have a gas fireplace?
Some of the “logs” used in gas fireplaces produce a lot of black soot. Those deposits should be removed to prevent buildup.
Do packaged logs like Duraflame and Pine Mountain brands cause buildup?
Yes. Though they are manufactured, they still contain wood products and therefore produce creosote. Creosote buildup is highly flammable and should be removed regularly.
